LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Garett Claypool (1-1) allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, recording seven strikeouts, to lead the UCLA baseball team past Long Beach State, 7-5, on Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (20-21) was led at the plate by designated hitter Casey Haerther, who went 2-for-4 with one grand slam and a career-high five RBI. Second baseman Eddie Murray went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Left-hander Gavin Brooks notched his team-leading eighth save of the season. Brooks allowed one run and two hits in 1.1 innings of relief to help UCLA secure its 10th victory in 14 games.

Second baseman Derek Legg led Long Beach State (20-20) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run. First baseman Steve Tinoco went 1-for-3 with two RBI and center fielder Jordan Casas was 2-for-5 with one run.

49ers left-hander Jeff Lease (2-2) absorbed the loss, allowing five runs and five hits in the first two innings.

UCLA jumped to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Murray led off with a single and moved to second as right fielder Chris Giovinazzo reached on a blooping bunt single. After first baseman Cody Decker drew a one-out walk, Haerther connected with his second grand slam of the season, a bases-clearing shot to left field.

The Bruins added one run in the bottom of the second. After shortstop Niko Gallego singled to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Steve Rodriguez, Murray lined a run-scoring double to right field.

UCLA pushed its advantage to 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Center fielder Blair Dunlap led off the frame with a double to right field. After stealing third base, Dunlap scored on a single by Haerther.

Long Beach State got on the board with one run in the top of the seventh. A two-out single through the left side of the infield by third baseman Taylor Krick scored Legg. The 49ers reduced UCLA's lead to 6-4 with a three-run eighth inning. After a leadoff walk and stolen base by pinch-hitter Brennan Metzger, shortstop Devin Lohman singled home Metzger from second. Tinoco plated two runners with a two-out base-hit up the middle.

The Bruins scored one two-out run in the eighth, and Long Beach State answered with a two-out run in the ninth.
