LOS ANGELES - Freshman Ben Hohl scored a career-high four goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 14-6, Saturday afternoon at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
UC Santa Barbara sophomore Zsombor Vincze led the visiting Gauchos (17-11, 2-4 MPSF) with two goals.
Hohl scored the game's first two goals, one at 5:50 in the first quarter and another just 76 seconds later, to give the Bruins the lead for good. After a goal by senior Matthew Jacobs at 3:31 in the opening frame, UCLA led 3-0. UC Santa Barbara junior Travis Watts cut the Bruins' margin to 3-1 before the end of the first quarter.
UCLA registered three goals in the first four minutes of the second frame to grab a 6-1 lead. UC Santa Barbara cut UCLA's advantage to 6-2 with a strike by freshman Brian Bishop. Hohl scored his third goal of the afternoon, giving the Bruins a 7-2 lead, before UC Santa Barbara answered again with a goal from Vincze.
The Bruins outscored the Gauchos, 4-1, in the third quarter to gain a 11-4 lead. Hohl scored his fourth goal of the day just 34 seconds into the second half. The Gauchos closed to within six, at 11-5 and 12-6, in the final quarter before UCLA used goals from Sbutega and senior Marco Santos to lead 14-6.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin finished with eight saves for UCLA. UC Santa Barbara's Rick Wright tallied eight saves through the first three quarters, and Fraser Bunn made one stop in the fourth quarter.
No. 3 UCLA returns to the water for their final home game of the season, an MPSF contest against No. 7 Pepperdine, on Saturday, Nov. 17. Game time at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is 1 p.m.
