LOS ANGELES - The first rankings of the 2012 tennis season were released on Wednesday and both the UCLA men's and women's teams are ranked in the top 10 to begin the year. In addition, both teams have several players listed in the individual rankings.
The UCLA women, who are coming off a semifinal showing at last year's NCAA Championships, begin the year at No. 5 nationally. NCAA Champion Florida kicks off the season as the nation's top-ranked team, followed by NCAA runner-up Stanford. Duke and North Carolina are ranked No. 3 and 4, respectively.
Individually, the Bruins have five players listed in the ITA Singles Rankings led by freshman Robin Anderson at No. 8. She is followed by No. 62 McCall Jones, No. 70 Pamela Montez, No. 83 Courtney Dolehide and No. 112 Kaitlin Ray. UCLA also has two ranked doubles teams, as Anderson and Skylar Morton check in at No. 12, followed by Dolehide and Montez at No. 23.
UCLA begins the dual-match season at home against UC Irvine on Jan. 25.
After finishing last year ranked No. 11 nationally, the UCLA men begin the season at No. 9 in the country. Individually, sophomore Clay Thompson is the Bruins' highest ranked singles player at No. 72. He is followed by No. 86 Marcos Giron and No. 94 Adrien Puget.
The UCLA men do not have any doubles teams ranked to begin the season. They kick off the dual-match season at home against BYU on Jan. 20.
