Corvallis, Ore. - Sophomore midfielder Victor Munoz scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to give the No. 13/15 UCLA men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the Oregon State Beavers.
With the win, the Bruins improved to 9-3-1 on the season and 4-0 in Pac-12 play while Oregon State dropped to 3-7-1 and 1-2 in the conference with the loss.
The Bruins fell behind early in the match as Oregon State defender John Swenson headed a ball off of a corner kick past Brian Rowe to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute. Oregon State looked to go into halftime with that 1-0 lead, but Kelyn Rowe scored the equalizer for the Bruins in the 43rd minute to tie the game at 1-1. Victor Munoz started the play by passing a long ball into the box where Rowe took the ball and put a shot past Oregon State keeper Steve Spangler. From there the two teams went into the locker room tied at 1-1.
In the second half, neither side was able to score for the first 44 minutes of play and the game looked destined to go to overtime. But Victor Munoz scored in the 89th minute to give UCLA the 2-1 win. Ryan Hollingshead took the ball to the center of the box and sent a pass to the left side to Munoz, who proceeded to shoot the ball past Spangler to the far post to score the game-winning goal.
Overall, the Beavers outshot the Bruins 16-14 and Brian Rowe made four saves to earn the win.
The Bruins return home next weekend to take on the San Diego State Aztecs at Drake Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 5 pm.
