Feb. 14, 2012
Sophomore sprinter Kathryn Murphy (Novato, CA/Marin Catholic HS) of the UCLA women's swimming & diving team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 6-12.
Murphy had a huge meet against USC over the weekend. She first anchored the 200 medley relay that swam a season-best by over one second and improved upon their NCAA B cut time. Her split of 22.04 was the fastest anchor split of anybody swimming in the event. Murphy then won the 50 freestyle with a new school, facility and meet record time of 22.45. She broke a school record that had stood since 2002. That was a lifetime-best swim for the sophomore and an NCAA B cut mark that will make NCAAs. She followed that swim up with a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle and then capped off her day as the No. 1 swimmer in the 200 free relay that defeated USC. She split 22.69 on the opening leg and helped the Bruins set a new school, meet and facility record of 1:30.43. The school record had stood since 2001. That time was a season-best and improved NCAA B cut time for the Bruins.
This is Murphy's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
