MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman right-hander Garett Claypool (3-0) threw five scoreless innings to lead the No. 21 UCLA baseball team past No. 17 Pepperdine, 4-1, Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Shortstop Brandon Crawford's 3-for-4 performance helped the Bruins sweep the Waves in this season's home-and-home series.

UCLA (28-19, 12-3 Pac-10) notched its 20th victory in its last 25 games and ended its regular-season non-conferfence record at 16-16. Claypool allowed just four hits in five scoreless innings, striking out four and walking two. Crawford had a two-RBI double, one run and one intentional walk. Second baseman Alden Carrithers hit 2-for-5 with one run.

Pepperdine right-hander Brett Hunter (6-5) absorbed the loss, surrendering three runs and three hits in one inning of relief. Designated hitter Eric Thames led the Waves (31-17, 10-5 West Coast) with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

UCLA captured a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis led off the inning with a base hit to left field and second baseman Alden Carrithers followed with a single to center. Curtis and Carrithers advanced 90 feet on a balk, and shortstop Brandon Crawford brought home both runners with a double off the right-field wall. Crawford made his way to third via a walk, drawn by left fielder Will Penniall, and a stolen base before scoring on a wild pitch.

Ryan Babineau bolstered UCLA's lead in the seventh when he belted a solo home run, his fifth round-tripper of the season, off the top of the wall in left-center field.

Pepperdine scored in the seventh inning on right-hander Brant Rustich's throwing error, allowing center fielder Adrian Ortiz to score from first base.

UCLA returns to action Friday, May 11, when the Bruins open a three-game Pac-10 series at Arizona State. Game time on Friday is slated for 7 p.m. The conference-leading Bruins lead the Sun Devils by one game in the Pac-10 standings.

Game Notes: Tim Murphy limited the Waves to two hits and struck out four in 1.2 innings of relief; Murphy escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth by striking out Denny Duron looking on a 1-and-2 count...Claypool recorded his second victory in his last three starts...in seven starts this season (all on Tuesdays), Claypool has recorded a 1.82 ERA and a .210 opponent batting average with 20 strikeouts in 29.2 innings...Brandon Crawford and Alden Carrithers each recorded their team-leading 20th multi-hit efforts of the season...Brant Rustich struck out two hitters in 2.1 innings of relief for UCLA.
