Berkeley, Calif. - The ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team passed its first true test of the 2012 season on Friday afternoon, notching a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 13 Cal at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley. With the win, the Bruins keep their unblemished record, improving to 5-0 on the season. The loss was the first for Cal on the year, as it falls to 3-1.

UCLA dropped the doubles point for the first time this season on Friday, as Cal posted wins at all three courts. The closest doubles match was at court No. 2, where UCLA's Alex Brigham and Marcos Giron came just short in their bid to upset 27th-ranked Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan, falling 7-6(4). Cal had already won the doubles point by the time that match finished.

The Bears actually owned a 2-0 lead in Friday's encounter, claiming the first singles point of the day when Ahmed Ismail downed Brigham, 6-3, 6-1 at court No. 6. It was the only singles match to finish in straight sets. Despite getting behind early, UCLA would even the match at 2-2 following wins by Dennis Mkrtchian at court No. 5 and Clay Thompson at court No. 2. Thompson, who didn't win a single game in the first set of his match with Cueto, rallied to win 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.

After McLachlan put the Bears ahead 3-2 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over UCLA sophomore Adrien Puget at court No. 4, the Bruins suddenly found themselves needing to win the two remaining singles matches to pull off the win. UCLA did just that, tying the match when Giron downed Chris Konigsfeldt, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 at court No. 2. The clinching win came from redshirt senior Nick Meister, who downed Nick Andrews, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 to give UCLA the 4-3 win.

UCLA is scheduled to face No. 6 Stanford on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Cardinal dropped a 7-0 decision to top-ranked USC on Friday.
