TOURNAMENT ACTION CONCLUDES FOR NINTH-RANKED UCLA
The defending national champion and ninth-ranked Bruins finish up tournament action this weekend at the Long Beach Marriott Invitational, facing Sacramento State (1 p.m.) and Long Beach State (6 p.m.) on Friday, Cal State Fullerton (3:45 p.m.) and BYU (6 p.m.) on Saturday and Saint Mary's (3:45 p.m.) on Sunday. All games will be played at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif. (5720 Clark Ave., Lakewood, CA 90712) and will feature Gametracker at UCLABruins.com.

ON DECK
The Bruins are off next week for Winter quarter finals. UCLA next plays on Monday, March 21 against UC Santa Barbara in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins dropped three spots to ninth in this week's USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll and fell from ninth to 10th in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings. UCLA tied Arizona for first in the Pac-10 preseason rankings, with each team receiving four first-place votes and 46 points.

SCOUTING THE SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS
The Hornets hold a 2-7 record and host Pacific in a doubleheader on Wednesday before traveling south for five games. Sacramento State has been off since hosting the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Crossover Tournament, as it defeated Weber State and lost to Idaho State. The Hornets are 0-2 against ranked teams this year, falling to San Diego State and Washington. Sacramento State is hitting .226 team with two homers, averaging 3.2 runs per game. Sophomore Emily McCormick leads the squad with a .367 average and six runs batted in. Three others, sophomore Kelly Shepard (.353), junior Alyssa Nakken (.346) and freshman Paige Martin (.304), are also batting above .300. In the circle, freshman Taylor Stroud is 1-2 with a team-low 0.97 earned run average and 12 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings. Senior Megan Schaefer is also 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 20 innings. Kathy Strahan is in her 19th year at Sacramento State and has a record of 509-477-2. The Bruins lead the all-time series against the Hornets 20-5 and won the last matchup on Feb. 9, 2006 in Poway, Calif. by a score of 22-3 in five innings. Sacramento State broke a 16-game losing streak to UCLA with a 2-1 win in Poway in 2000. The Bruins are 8-3 in neutral site games with the Hornets.

SCOUTING THE LONG BEACH STATE 49ERS
The 49ers are 13-6 coming into this weekend's play, going 3-1 last weekend at the Campbell/Cartier Classic with victories over Houston and Fresno State, which were nationally ranked last week, and Baylor, which is ranked this week. Long Beach has also defeated Top 10 squad Oklahoma. The 49ers are hitting .282 as a team with 12 homers and 14 stolen bases, averaging 4.1 runs per game. Four players are hitting over .300, led by sophomore Nalani St. Germain, who is tops on the squad with a .400 average, four homers and 13 RBI. Also above .300 are junior Megan Denio (.391), freshman Sarah Carrasco (.348) and sophomore Caitrin DeBaun (.322). In the circle, freshman Erin Jones-Wesley, who no-hit Baylor last weekend, is 6-2 with a 1.60 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 57 innings. Senior Brooke Turner is 4-1 with a 3.07 earned run average and 33 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings. Kim Sowder is in her fifth year at Long Beach State and holds a record of 142-95. The Bruins and the 49ers have met at least once in each of the last five seasons, nine times overall. UCLA leads the series 65-9 and claimed an 11-3, six-inning victory at Easton Stadium last March 26. The last win for the 49ers came at this tournament in 2009, a 2-1 triumph. All nine Long Beach wins have been by one or two runs. The Bruins are 15-2 in neutral site games against the 49ers.

SCOUTING THE CAL STATE FULLERTON TITANS
Cal State Fullerton has a record of 6-10 after dropping a home doubleheader to Troy on Tuesday. The Titans went 3-1 at their home tournament last weekend, beating Oregon State, Southern Miss and IPFW, and are 1-3 against ranked teams this season, beating Oregon on Feb. 13. Fullerton is batting .249 as a team with five home runs and 14 stolen bases, averaging 2.8 runs per game. Senior K.C. Craddick leads the team with a .400 average and is second with seven RBI. Junior Nicole Johnson is second on the squad with a .325 average. In the circle, senior Ari Cervantes is 5-5 with a 2.65 earned run average and 41 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings. Michelle Gromacki is in her 12th year at Fullerton and has a record of 387-257-1. The Bruins are 38-32-1 all-time against the Titans and have won three in a row, including a 9-6 victory at Easton Stadium last Feb. 24. Each of Fullerton's last three wins in the series have been by one run, including a 1-0, eight-inning triumph in Westwood in 2008. The Titans hold a 7-5 lead in neutral site games against the Bruins.

SCOUTING THE BYU COUGARS
The Cougars (8-12) went 1-4 last weekend at the Campbell/Cartier Classic, falling to ranked teams UCLA, Fresno State and Houston. BYU is 1-7 this season against ranked squads, beating Texas A&M on Feb. 12. The Cougars are hitting .267 as a team with 14 home runs and 20 stolen bases, averaging 4.9 runs per game. Senior Jessica Fitu is first on the team with a .471 average, five homers and 23 RBI. Junior Tiffany Messerschmidt (.341) and sophomore JC Clayton (.333) are also both hitting above .300. In the circle, senior Paige Affleck leads the team with a 5-8 record, 60 strikeouts and 79 2/3 innings to go with a 3.51 earned run average. Sophomore Hannah Howell is 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings. Gordon Eakin is in his ninth year at BYU and holds a record of 339-154. The Bruins have won all three matchups against the Cougars, including a 5-2 victory last Friday in San Diego. A recap of that game is available in this release. UCLA also claimed a 6-0 victory on March 6, 2003 in Fresno and a 10-2, five-inning win on Feb. 16, 2002 in Las Vegas.

SCOUTING THE SAINT MARY'S GAELS
The Gaels (3-2) have been off since the PCSC Crossover Tournament in Sacramento during the last week of February, as they beat Idaho State and Weber State, while losing to Portland State. Saint Mary's, which played at the Los Angeles Regional last year after winning its conference tournament, is hitting .218 as a team with a home run and six stolen bases, averaging 3.0 runs per game. Freshman Brittany Sabatini is batting .400 with four RBI, senior Tiffany Gonzales is hitting .313 and junior Michelle Mounts leads the team with four stolen bases to go with a .308 average. In the circle, junior Britany Linton is 2-1 with a 2.62 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in a team-high 21 1/3 innings. Jessica Hanaseth is in her seventh year at Saint Mary's and has a record of 124-209. The Bruins have won all 11 matchups with the Gaels, including an 11-4 victory on May 21, 2010 at Easton Stadium. The Bruins have outscored the Gaels 87-7 and are 2-0 in neutral site games.
