LOS ANGELES - UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster announced the signing of women's tennis standout Andrea Remynse to a letter of intent Monday. The junior tennis player for Battle Creek, Mich., has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the USTA Girls' 18s singles division.
"We're obviously thrilled to have Andrea join our program and become a Bruin," said Sampras Webster, who is in her 11th season as head coach. "She is one of the top freshman recruits in the country so it's exciting that she chose UCLA to develop her game."
Remynse, who has been playing in the 18s division since the age of 13, recently captured the singles and doubles (w/Katie Rybakova) titles at the Costa Rica Bowl in San Jose, Costa Rica. She is also coming off a semifinal showing in both singles and doubles (w/Jamie Hampton) at the Easter Bowl in Palm Springs, Calif. She reached the finals of the 18s division at the USTA National Hardcourts as a 16-year old back in 2004. She has been ranked in the top-30 of the ITF Junior World Rankings, competing in such events as the U.S. Open, French Open, Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl junior tennis championships.
Remynse, who has recently limited her junior schedule to play a number of professional events as an amateur, reached the finals of an ITF women's event in Mazatlan, Mexico this past May. She has also advanced to the semifinals in Los Mochis (Mexico) and Forth Worth (TX), and the quarterfinals in Southlake (TX) and Edmond (Okla.).
