HONOLULU - Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement registered 14 saves to lead the No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 16 Hawaii, 8-4, in an MPSF match at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday evening.
UCLA led 4-1 at halftime and pushed its margin to 6-1 after three quarters before surrendering three goals to Hawaii (7-11, 0-6 MPSF) in the final period.
Hawaii received a game-high three goals from Amarens Genee in its final home match of the season.
Ronimus scored the first of her two goals with 5:45 to play before halftime, and Gisselle Naranjo found the back of the cage with 3:50 left in the second frame, putting UCLA ahead by a 4-0 margin.
Hawaii got on the board with 1:28 left in the first half on a goal from Emily Carr.
The Bruins continued to pull away, as Ronimus scored her second goal of the match with 6:52 left in the third quarter. Natasha Schulman scored as a 6-on-5 opportunity was expiring with 1:53 left in the third period to give UCLA a 6-1 cushion.
Trailing 7-1, Hawaii received three goals from Genee in the final quarter, including her third goal of the match with one second to play in regulation.
Hawaii goalkeeper Serena Reid was credited with two saves in the cage.
UCLA returns to action at No. 5 California (16-6, 3-2 MPSF) on Saturday, April 7. Game time of the MPSF match at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex is 1 p.m.
