LYNCHBURG, Va. - UCLA right-hander David Berg has captured second-team freshman All-America acclaim from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA), as announced on Monday.

Berg, a freshman from Covina, Calif., leads all Pac-12 Conference pitchers with a 1.58 ERA and .172 opposing batting average while having appeared in a nation-leading 47 games. He has registered 10 strikeouts and one walk through eight scoreless innings in four postseason appearances over the last two weeks.

Berg enters the College World Series having tallied 61 strikeouts and 16 walks in 68.1 innings. He has already established the Pac-12 and UCLA single-season records for pitching appearances (47).

The product of Bishop Amat High School stands four appearances shy of tying the NCAA's single-season record of 51, set by Florida's Connor Falkenbach in 2005. Berg's 47 appearances is currently tied with two other pitchers in NCAA Division I history.

UCLA opens the 2012 College World Series against Stony Brook on Friday, June 15. Game time at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha is 2 p.m. PT/ 4 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and will feature a video stream on ESPN3.com. UCLA radio announcers John Ramey and Tim Wilhelm will have the call live on uclabruins.com.
