The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team travels to the Arizona desert this weekend to participate in the annual PING/ASU Invitational at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, AZ.
The Bruins' lineup this week features senior Brianna Do, juniors Lee Lopez and Tiffany Lua, sophomore Ani Gulugian and freshman Erynne Lee. Do earned the final spot this week in practice and qualifying.
"We're looking forward to playing this week at ASU after our extended break from competition due to final exams," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "Brianna Do, the 2011 U.S. Public Links Champion, will be rounding out our lineup in the fifth spot. She has been playing well in qualifying and practice, so we're looking forward to seeing what she can do."
In 12 rounds this season, Do has averaged 73.2 with a pair of Top 10 results. She was ranked 52nd nationally this week by GolfWeek.
The Bruins' remaining four players are all ranked among the nation's Top 50, led by Lee who ranks third, Lopez at No. 4 and Lua at No. 7. Lee and Lopez are tied for the team lead with stroke averages of 72.2, followed by Lua at 72.4. This season, both Lee and Lua have not had a score dropped, each boasting a counter ratio of 100%. Lopez leads the team with nine rounds under par and three rounds under 70. Gulugian, ranked 34th by GolfWeek, has a scoring average of 73.5.
The Bruins will join a 17-team field that features No. 3 USC, No. 5 Arizona State, seventh-ranked Vanderbilt and No. 8 LSU among its highest ranked teams. The Bruins are also the two-time defending champions. They won last year's event with a one-under par score of 863. Overall, UCLA has won this event four times -- all since 2004. UCLA has also produced two individual champions who have won three titles here: Stephanie Kono (2010) and Charlotte Mayorkas (2003, '04).
"The field is strong, but we feel well-prepared," Forsyth continued.
The Karsten Golf Course will play to a par of 71 over 6,099 yards.
