LUBBOCK, Texas - UCLA sophomore Pat Valaika has been named to the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award watch list, as announced Thursday by the College Baseball Foundation.

Valaika currently leads all Pac-12 Conference players with 140 assists, having compiled a .952 fielding percentage and started all 41 games for UCLA at shortstop.

The native of Valencia, Calif., has batted .261 with a team-leading 11 doubles as a sophomore this spring. Valaika is among seven Pac-12 shortstops to have been named to the 50-man Wallace Award watch list. Valaika's .952 fielding percentage is the third-highest of those seven Pac-12 shortstops.

The Pac-12 and Southeastern Conferences lead the nation with seven players on the award's first watch list. The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented June 30 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions.

UCLA's baseball team, ranked No. 14 by Baseball America, returns to action against No. 13 Purdue on Saturday. Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m, with Game 2 slated for a 5 p.m. start.
