WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Jeff Gelalich and Adam Plutko of the UCLA baseball team have earned Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, for the week of March 5-11, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Gelalich batted .563 (9-for-16) with one double and three runs in UCLA's four wins last week. He went 9-for-13 (.692) in the three-game series sweep at No. 9 Georgia.
Plutko struck out 11 with no walks and scattered five hits in his second career complete game shutout on Friday night at Georgia. His start helped UCLA sweep the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga. He allowed just one baserunner from the second through fifth innings, improved his record to 2-1, and lowered his earned-run average to a 2.13 mark.
Gelalich, who went 4-for-4 with a career-high four hits in Friday's 2-0 victory, has secured his second Pac-12 Player of the Week honors of the season and of his career.
Plutko also earned his second career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award. He was the recipient of the conference's weekly honor on May 9, 2011, after throwing a complete game shutout at Oregon during his freshman season.
UCLA faces USC at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and cost $12 at Dodger Stadium on the day of the game. Parking is free and concessions cost $4 and under.
