Junior Laef Barnes (Nine Mile Falls, WA/Mead HS) of the UCLA men's track and field team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week (Apr. 7-13).
Barnes made history on Saturday at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational, as he became just the fourth Bruin and the 307th U.S. man to crack the 4-minute mile barrier. He won the invitational heat in a time of 3:59.96, a mark which ranks fourth all-time in UCLA history. His time bettered his previous best by over six seconds and was five seconds better than his nearest competitor. Barnes was led by a rabbit during the first 800m of the race then ran the final two laps on his own en route to the sub-4 minute mile time. His mile time equates to around a 3:42 1500m mark, which would rank in the top-4 in the country this season.
This is Barnes' first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
