LOS ANGELES - Several thousand students and parents gathered at New Pauley Pavilion on Friday evening for Pauley Opening Madness, an event hosted by UCLA Recreation.
The two-hour exhibition saw showcases from the men's and women's basketball teams - including a 3-point shootout, super shot competition and dunk contest. In addition, head coaches from each of the five teams who play in the arena spoke to fans, and two students groups - NSU Modern dance group and Kyodo Taiko drum group - performed in New Pauley Pavilion.
"We just wanted to come out here, have fun, and put on a show for the fans who come out and support us," sophomore guard Norman Powell said. "I didn't get to play in Pauley last season, but this definitely gave us a feel for what it's going to be like this year."
Attendees were also shown a series of welcome home videos, one from former UCLA and current NBA starting point guards Russell Westbrook and Darren Collison and another commemorating various important events that took place in the historic arena prior to its renovation.
UCLA Yell Crew and The Den taught the crowd several trademark UCLA cheers and the "8-clap" while former Bruin and current ESPN analyst Sean Farnham served as one of two emcees.
"I think we should get Kari to shoot for us," men's coach Ben Howland said of Korver, who won a national 3-point shooting contest at the Final Four a season ago.
The Supershot competition and dunk competition saw the men's and women's teams work in pairs against one another.
"It's been great to see the two programs working together because that doesn't happen everywhere in the country," women's coach Cori Close said.
Teamed with a student, redshirt junior forward David Wear and junior guard Thea Lemberger won the Supershot event over a team featuring redshirt senior guard Larry Drew and Korver, while sophomore guard Norman Powell and freshman guard Nirra Fields combined to win the dunk contest, judged by a five-person panel that featured former men's standouts and NBA veterans Toby Bailey and Marques Johnson and former WNBA player and All-America selection Lisa Willis.
UCLA will host Pauley Pavilion Alumni and Community Open House from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, as part of "Welcome Back Pauley Week" presented by UCLA Health System.
