Seventh-ranked UCLA upset No.3 UC Santa Barbara in four games Friday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-28, 30-24, 30-32, 30-19 in 123 minutes in front of 1,080 fans. The victory raised the Bruins' overall record to 10-7 and 8-6 in league play. The Gauchos lost their second straight match and fell to 12-5, 10-4.
Senior Steve Klosterman led UCLA with 23 kills (.314) and 25.0 points. He also added an ace, seven digs and two block assists. Senior Paul George added 16 kills (.353) and 17 points, followed by 12 kills (.450) from freshman Garrett Muagututia who served three aces and recorded six block assists for 18.0 points. Freshman setter Kevin Ker started his second straight match and recorded a career-best 59 assists and five kills (.714).
Junior Theo Brunner led UCSB with 14 kills (.423). Senior opposite Evan Patak, the national leader in kills, was held to 13 kills (.111), but served five aces for 19.5 points.
After a road match against Long Beach State on Feb. 28, the Bruins return home on Mar. 2 to host UC San Diego. On Mar. 7, they will host Loyola-Chicago in a non-league match.
