Senior Amanda Blong and sophomore Marisa Samaniego led the Bruin divers on day one of the Trojan Diving Invitational as both posted second-place finishes in their respective events on Friday afternoon. Blong finished second on 1M (278.45), while Samaniego was the runner-up on 3M (265.00).
Blong and Samaniego also posted third-place finishes on Friday, with Blong third on 1M (260.10) and Samaniego third on 3M (266.85).
"Marisa did great today," said Dive Coach Tom Stebbins. "She won the prelim on 3M and was very close to notching a victory. Amanda was also very solid today, along with Sara (Clark).
"To get as close as we were to winning and coming up short is a little disappointing, but when you have a chance to win, you need to be able to win. We will spend the next few weeks developing a sense of urgency in terms of finding ways to win."
On each board, all of the Bruin competitors made the finals, highlighting a strong first day of competition.
"I am really pleased with our initial effort today," noted Stebbins. "I'm so happy that all of the kids made the finals on both boards. We did a good job of competing. I think we know exactly what we need to work on to get better and that makes our jobs so much easier. We are committed to fixing the things that we need to fix.
"I'm really impressed with our transfer, Shannon (Pirozzi)," added Stebbins. "She competed really well today."
"We are looking forward to Tess and Britney competing on tower tomorrow. That is where their strengths are and it should be a very competitive competition."
