LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team received goals from 10 players in a 12-6 victory over No. 19 Air Force at Spieker Aquatics Center on Monday afternoon. Senior Jacob Murphy and freshman Cristiano Mirarchi scored two goals each to lead the host Bruins (16-4).
Senior Bobby Geiger led Air Force (10-17) with two goals in Monday's non-conference tilt.
UCLA raced to a 5-0 advantage after the first period and opened up an 8-0 cushion following senior Kevin Kuga's goal with 1:24 to play in the second quarter. Air Force got on the board with 25 seconds remaining in the first half on a shot from Garrett Womack.
In the Bruins' five-goal first quarter, Murphy opened the scoring with a goal on an assist from sophomore Josh Samuels with 6:23 to play. Mirarchi followed with his first of two goals on the afternoon, scoring on senior Ben Hohl's assist with 5:33 left. Junior Brett Hays found the back of the cage from two meters with 4:24 remaining before Mirarchi added his second goal of the day at the 1:39 mark.
Sophomore Griffin White scored UCLA's fifth goal, converting on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 31 seconds left in the opening frame.
Murphy (6:47) and Lathrope (3:25) each scored in the second quarter, pushing the Bruins' margin to seven goals before Kuga's shot found the back of the cage with 1:24 remaining. UCLA led Air Force at halftime, 8-1.
Air Force outscored the Bruins in the third period, 2-1. The visiting Falcons converted on a 6-on-5 opportunity with a shot from Kurt Wallin at 5:31 in the third quarter, reducing UCLA's lead to 8-2. After Bruins' freshman Aimone Barabino (4:09) scored on a shot from two meters, Air Force registered a power-play goal from Dillon Fisher (2:21).
The Bruins owned a 9-3 lead after three quarters, and each team exchanged three goals in the final period.
UCLA sophomore goalkeeper Matt Rapacz made his six appearance of the season (fifth start), totaling five saves and allowing just one goal in the first half. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Mesesan made three stops in the final two quarters and allowed five goals.
Air Force goalkeeper Mike Fish collected eight saves, including five stops in the second quarter. Monday afternoon's game marked the final regular-season contest of the fall for Air Force.
UCLA hosts its final home game of the regular season against No. 10 Pepperdine on Saturday, Nov. 13. Game time at Spieker Aquatics Center is 4 p.m. The Bruins will honor their five seniors prior to the MPSF match.
