Eight Tennis Players Earn All-Pac-10 Honors

May 5, 2009

LOS ANGELES - UCLA's Haythem Abid and Yasmin Schnack headline a group of eight Bruins tennis players who earned All-Pac-10 Conference honors on Monday. A total of six UCLA men's players and two women's players were recognized by the conference.

Abid, a junior from Tunis, Tunisia, slowly worked his way back into the Bruin lineup this year after missing all of the 2008 season with a wrist injury. He has played mostly at the No. 1 singles position for the Bruins this season, going 8-7. Two of his greatest wins on the year have come in UCLA's two victories over cross-town rival USC. Abid defeated Pac-10 Player of the Year Robert Farah, 6-4, 6-3 in the Bruins' 4-3 victory over the Trojans on March 5. Farah was the nation's No. 1-ranked player at the time. Abid then downed Trojan Jaak Poldma, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position on April 14, clinching a 5-2 victory over USC, helping the Bruins claim their sixth straight Pac-10 title in the process. Abid has also done extremely well in doubles this year, going 5-2 at the No. 1 position with partner Nick Meister. The duo also boasts a 3-0 record against ranked teams. It marks the third career all-conference selection for Abid, who was a first-team All-Pac-10 pick in 2007 and a second-team selection in 2006. He is currently ranked No. 49 in singles and No. 29 in doubles (w/Meister) in the latest Campbell's/ITA Rankings.

In addition to Abid, Matt Brooklyn (Jr.) and Michael Look (Sr.) were named to the second team. Harel Srugo (Sr.), Holden Seguso (So.) and Meister (So.) were honorable mention selections.

On the women's side, Schnack, a junior from Sacramento, Calif., has been the Bruins' No. 1 singles player for most of the season, going 10-3. She is also a perfect 6-0 at the No. 2 singles spot, boasting an overall record (including tournaments) of 26-8. Her highest ranked singles win on the season came over No. 3 Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) in a dual match on April 10. Schnack, who is 14-7 against ranked singles opponents, owned an 11-match winning streak from Feb. 1-March 6. She has also done extremely well in doubles with partner Andrea Remynse. The duo has played every match but one at the No. 1 singles position, going 15-5 in dual matches and 20-6 overall. Remynse and Schnack also own a win over the nation's top-ranked doubles team, defeating No. 1 Renata Kucerkova/Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State, 8-5 in a dual match on Feb. 26. Schnack and Remynse are currently the nation's third ranked doubles team. Schnack, who is currently ranked No. 15 nationally in singles, will compete in both singles and doubles in the upcoming NCAA Championships, May 20-25 in College Station, Texas.

Remynse, a sophomore, was named to the All-Pac-10 second team.
