LOS ANGELES - Junior forward Lauren Cheney scored a pair of goals, and freshman Summer Williams notched the first goal of her career Sunday, as the second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over UC Irvine at Drake Stadium.
Cheney, who has scored in all three matches that she has played in this season, got the Bruins on the board in the 19th minute on a shot from the top left corner of the box. After receiving the ball from defender Erin Hardy, Cheney spun her defender around before unleashing a shot to the far right corner of the goal, just past UCI goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere.
Cheney would score her fourth goal of the season just minutes later following a mishandled ball by de Seriere. Defender Lauren Wilmoth crossed a ball into the box that de Seriere tried to cut off, however the ball came loose and Cheney was right there to put it in from about five yards out.
After enjoying a 2-0 lead at the half, UCLA would get its final goal of the match in the 72nd minute on a strike by the freshman Williams. Cheney was again involved in the scoring play, as she crossed a ball from the left side toward the top of the box where Williams one-timed it into the back of the Anteater goal.
Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson made one save in 84 minutes of action before being relieved by freshman Yiana Dimmitt. UCLA outshot UCI, 18-1 on the afternoon. Sunday marked the Bruins third straight shutout and 38th consecutive home victory.
Next up for UCLA is the UConn Classic next week in Storrs, Conn. The Bruins will face No. 19 UConn on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (EST) and Brown on Sunday at Noon.
