Freshman pitcher Grant Watson (Bakersfield, CA/Centennial HS) of the UCLA baseball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Mar. 12-18.
Watson, who was also named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 13.0 innings in three appearances (two starts) for UCLA last week. He picked up the victory in each of his two starts - against USC at Dodger Stadium in a 7-2 win on Tuesday and versus Arizona State in a 4-2 series-clinching win on Sunday. Watson limited USC to one run and seven hits in six innings at Dodger Stadium, recording five strikeouts and no walks. In a relief appearance on Friday night, Watson recorded three consecutive outs in the eighth and ninth innings with the game tied, 5-5. The freshman from Bakersfield, Calif., earned the victory in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader, limiting Arizona State to two runs and four hits in six-plus innings. Watson became the first UCLA pitcher to notch two victories in one week since Trevor Bauer accomplished the feat as a freshman in 2009.
This is Watson's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
