Coach Mora addresses media after the evening practice
The Bruin football team took the practice field on Saturday for Brett Hundley's first practices after being named the starter on Friday. Please note that Sunday's start time will now be at 4:00 p.m. Continue to check the website for practice time changes / updates.
Saturday's evening session ended as darkness descended over the practice field. It reminded coach Mora of the times as a youngster when the parents call the kids home at night when it gets to dark for the games in the yard or in the street to continue. "It was a good practice," said coach Mora. "The enthusiasm, execution and concentration were really good today." Torian White and Colby Cyburt joined in on some drills with the offensive line in the evening session.
Earlier in the day, coach Mora discussed the quarterback situation. "We talked to the quarterbacks as a group yesterday," said coach Mora on Saturday morning. "They all handled it very, very well. Richard and Kevin both were disappointed, but immediately expressed their support for Brett."
"He has all the qualities we would like in a quarterback," continued Coach Mora. He noted that Hundley has tremendous leadership skills and that his teammates relate well to him. Coach indicated that the redshirt freshman has a rare confidence and that every day it has seemed to grow. He pointed out that Hundley has thrown the ball with a lot of confidence and accuracy and that his decision-making ability has impressed the staff. Coach reminded all the media that Brett was still a young, developing quarterback, who, as he gets more and more playing time, would develop into an outstanding quarterback at UCLA. He also has the ability to run and to keep a plays alive.
Starting quarterback Brett Hundley said he was just so happy when he was told he had won the job that he cried. He said it was because he realized how much work he had put into trying to win the job. "They were tears of joy," said the redshirt freshman from Arizona. Today at practice, Hundley noted that he did things the same. "I got the job, but must continue to get better each day and stay focused and humble," said Hundley. "I will do my best to lead this team into battle."
Hundley, who hails from Chandler, Ariz., earned UCLA Football's Coach Ed Kezirian "Coach K" team award for Academic and Athletic Balance during his 2011 redshirt season. A SuperPrep All-American at Chandler HS, he was rated the No. 3 quarterback nationally by scout.com and SuperPrep and earned a five-star ranking.
