Senior Marco Anzures is making his final cross country season one to remember as he led the Bruin men at the West Regional Championship in Springfield, Ore. on Saturday, all but sealing an individual bid to the National Championships. The men's team finished in seventh-place, while Stanford won the team crown.
Anzures, who earned second-team all-conference honors as UCLA's No. 1 runner at Pac-10s two weeks ago, earned All-West Region accolades on Saturday morning with his 11th-place finish on the 10k course (30:59.48). With today's finish, Anzures will most likely earn an individual bid to the NCAA meet, held in Terre Haute, Ind. on November 23rd.
The team's seventh-place finish is not likely to earn an at-large team bid to Nationals, so Anzures will be the sole representative for the Bruins in Indiana.
Fellow senior Marlon Patterson finished 31st in a time of 31:30.85. Freshman Mohamed Abdalla had a huge race as he finished 43rd as the Bruins' No. 3 runner (31:55.54). Today's race was only Abdalla's second cross country meet of the season (he was UCLA's top finisher at the Cal Poly Invite).
NCAA selection for the National meet will be announced on Monday evening. All at-large team bids and individual bids will be announced then.
