BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore Ben Hohl led the No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team with a season-high four goals in an 11-10 victory at No. 3 California on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Senior Krsto Sbutega chipped in three goals for the visiting Bruins (10-4, 2-1 MPSF) in the MPSF conference road contest.
UCLA overcame a late 10-9 deficit, as Hohl's fourth goal of the match broke a 10-10 tie with two seconds to play. Hohl scored from the point after a foul on the Golden Bears.
The Bruins led 8-6 entering the final quarter, before California (11-5, 0-2 MPSF) scored on four consecutive possessions to assume a 10-9 lead with 2:21 remaining. Hohl helped the Bruins tie the contest, 10-10, with a goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity at the 1:47 mark in the fourth quarter.
After a 1-1 start through the first quarter, UCLA outscored the Golden Bears, 4-2, in the second period to assume a 5-3 halftime lead. In the third quarter, California and UCLA continued trading goals, as the Golden Bears continued to reduce UCLA's margin from three goals to two.
Bruin goalkeeper Chay Lapin made eight stops in the cage. California's Jacob McIntosh registered seven stops.
UCLA returns to action at No. 17 Pacific on Sunday. Game time at Pacific's Chris Kjeldsen Pool is slated for 12 p.m.
