BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team edged No. 3 California, 7-6, in the Bruins' first MPSF match of the season at California's Spieker Aquatic Complex on Saturday evening. Junior Priscilla Orozco and freshman Brooke Martin led the Bruins (7-3, 1-0 MPSF) with two goals.
California's Emily Csikos scored a game-high five goals. The Golden Bears (10-2, 2-1 MPSF) also received one goal from Camille Hewko.
California led by a 2-1 margin after the first quarter. Csikos scored the game's first goal, before UCLA center Grace Reynolds tied the contest, 1-1. Csikos' second goal of the day pushed the Golden Bears ahead, 2-1.
Martin tied the game for UCLA with her first of two goals in the first minute of the second quarter. Hewko's goal at 5:37 in the second quarter handed the Golden Bears a 3-2 cushion. Again, Martin helped the Bruins tie the contest, 3-3, with her second goal of the contest.
California pushed ahead, 5-3, with 2:55 remaining in the third frame after Csikos scored two more goals. Priscilla Orozco found the back of the cage before the third period expired, clipping California's lead to 5-4.
UCLA outscored California, 3-1, in the final quarter to secure the MPSF victory. Less than one minute into the final frame, Priscilla Orozco scored her second goal of the match, knotting the score at 5-5. Sophomore Sarah Orozco put UCLA ahead, 6-5, with a goal at the 5:18 mark.
Sophomore Kelly Easterday's goal at 4:13 handed the Bruins a 7-5 advantage. Csikos scored her fifth goal of the evening on a penalty shot with 57 seconds to play. California's defense held UCLA on its final possession, giving the Golden Bears one final opportunity to push the game into overtime. California's final shot in the last 10 seconds hit the edge of the goal, preserving the victory for UCLA.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement recorded five saves for UCLA. California's Stephanie Peckham finished the evening with eight stops in the cage.
The Bruins return to action against UC Davis and Sonoma State on Sunday, Feb. 21. Both games will be played at Sonoma State. UCLA faces UC Davis at 11:15 a.m. and Sonoma State at 2:15 p.m.
