PASADENA, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 12-2 decision to No. 2 Stanford on Saturday morning at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Sophomore Ben Hohl and freshman Cullen Hennessy each scored one goal in the MPSF contest.
Stanford (14-2, 1-0 MPSF) led the entire way, racing to a 3-0 first quarter lead.
The Cardinal notched their first goal on a strike from Sage Wright just 49 seconds into the match. Stanford's Janson Wigo, who finished with a game-high three goals, scored at the first quarter's 3:30 mark and Chris Jacobson found the back of the cage with 1:12 remaining.
Trailing 4-0 with 2:45 remaining in the first half, UCLA (8-4, 1-1 MPSF) scored its first goal on a shot from Hohl, slicing the deficit to three goals. The Cardinal used a 7-0 run into the fourth quarter to pull away. Stanford led 5-1 at halftime and 9-1 after three quarters.
Hennessy's goal came with 1:34 remaining in the contest.
Stanford goalkeeper Jimmie Sandman recorded 11 saves, and Brian Pingree notched one stop in relief late in the fourth quarter. UCLA's Chay Lapin made two saves in the cage.
UCLA returns to action against No. 18 Brown on Sunday, Oct. 19. Game time at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is slated for 11 a.m.
