Swim & Dive to Host Arizona State and Arizona This Weekend in Pac-10 Action

Nov. 8, 2006

The UCLA swim and dive team will return to Pac-10 action this weekend as they host Arizona State on Friday and Arizona on Saturday. Diving events will begin at 12:00 pm on Friday and 11:00 am on Saturday, and will be held at the Sunset Rec Center, while swim events will start at noon on both days at the Men's Gym Pool.

The Bruins are undefeated this season, having posted wins at home versus Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara, and on the road versus the University of San Diego. Arizona State holds a record of 1-1, while Arizona is 1-0.

"Arizona State is a much improved team this year and they have already swam extremly fast for this early in the season," noted Swim Coach Cyndi Gallagher. "Caitlin Andrew and Jen Beckberger, along with their other great breaststroke group will give us a lot of challenges on Friday.

"Arizona, the 2006 Pac-10 Champions, are a great team and in my opinion, this year have the talent to win the NCAA Championships. It will be good for our team to stand up and compete against them early in the season."

Last year, UCLA defeated Arizona State 193.5-105.5 and lost to the Wildcats 145-98. Arizona is the defending Pac-10 champion, while UCLA was the runner-up. In the all-time series between both schools, the Bruins hold a 14-10 edge over the Wildcats and a 15-8-1 edge over the Sundevils.

"The good news is that we are healthy and have gotten through some injuries, so we should be ready to compete," added Gallagher. "We have had some good training the past two months and the ladies are looking forward to racing. I expect the team to be up for the challenges both of these teams create this weekend. We should continue to get faster every meet and are excited about racing two great Arizona teams."
