UCLA sophomores Brianna Do and Stephanie Kono each advanced with victories in the second round of match play at the 34th U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championship at The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame University. Unfortunately, they were forced to play each other in the Round of 16 and Do prevailed.
Do won her second round match 3 and 2 against Kelly Fuchik of Tulsa, Okla. Do birdied the 16th hole and made a par at the 17th to earn two late points and clinch the match with one hole to play. She then waited as her teammate survived a grueling match.
Kono lost a 3-up lead with bogeys at the 13th and 14th holes. She carried a 1-up lead into the 18th, before her opponent, Candace Schepperle of Birmingham, Ala., birdied. They played five more holes until Kono made a par to win at the 23rd hole.
In the duel of the two classmates, Do made a pair of key birdies at the 7th and 8th holes, snatching the lead from Kono. A pair of double bogeys at the 12th and 13th, put Kono at a three-hole disadvantage. The 15th and 16th holes were halved and Do advanced to the next round where she will play Lisa McCloskey of Houston, Tex. on Thursday.
