LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - No. 2 UCLA used a balanced scoring attack to defeat No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, 12-5, in a quarterfinal match of the SoCal Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Joint Forces Training Base.

Brett Hays, Bret Lathrope, Daniel Lenhart and Chris Wendt each scored two goals in UCLA's fourth consecutive victory. In all, UCLA received at least one goal from eight players. The Bruins (9-1) cruised past Air Force, 18-5, in a first-round match on Saturday morning.

Against the Gauchos (9-5) on Saturday afternoon, UCLA scored the game's first five goals. Wendt helped the Bruins take the lead with a 6-on-5 goal at 7:25 in the opening quarter. UCLA padded its cushion with three more goals in the first period. Lathrope scored at 6:36, Wendt found the back of the cage at 3:12 and Josh Samuels netted his 15th goal of the season at 2:39.

Leading 4-0 after one quarter, the Bruins extended their margin to five goals with Griffin White finding the back of the cage with 5:14 to play before halftime. UC Santa Barbara cut UCLA's cushion to four goals by intermission, as the Bruins carried a 7-3 cushion into the third quarter.

UCLA never led by fewer than three goals in the second half. UC Santa Barbara's Matt Gronow scored with 6:01 to play in the third quarter, cutting the Bruins' advantage to 7-4. UCLA scored the next two goals - from Hays on a 6-on-5 opportunity (5:20) and from Lathrope (2:31) - to secure a 9-4 lead.

The Bruins led 10-5 at the end of the third quarter and blanked the Gauchos, 2-0, in the final period.

UCLA junior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz netted six saves and allowed five goals in the first three quarters. Sophomore James Hartshorne did not allow any saves in the final period, recording three saves.

UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Myles Christian was credited with six saves.

UCLA will face No. 3 California (8-1) in a quarterfinal match of the SoCal Tournament on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. California defeated No. 6 Pacific, 11-9, in a quarterfinal match on Saturday.

The Bruins will play both of their games on Sunday at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, Calif.
