April 14, 2008

Sixth-ranked ranked UCLA will host No. 5 Pepperdine in one of three quarterfinal matches in the 2008 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Volleyball Tournament. The Bruins and Waves will meet on Sat., Apr. 19 in Pauley Pavilion. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Darren Preston will call the play-by-play action on www.uclabruins.com.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for students with valid identification. For more information call 310-UCLA-WIN or log on to www.tickets.ucla.edu.

Last week, both teams split their final conference series. The Bruins (17-13, 12-10) lost 3-1 at Stanford on Apr. 11 and beat Pacific 3-0 on Apr. 12. In their final home matches, the Waves (13-10, 12-10) won 3-0 against Hawaii on Friday, but dropped a 3-2 decision to the Warriors on Saturday. UCLA won the league tiebreaker with Pepperdine by virtue of its two conference victories in head-to-head competition.

In the current playoff format, the Bruins and Waves have never met in the conference quarterfinals. The Bruins hold a 2-1 edge in the playoffs, winning 3-1 in the 2000 MPSF Championship match and 3-0 in the 2006 semifinals. Pepperdine won 3-1 in the conference championship match in 1998. In all three years, UCLA advanced to win the NCAA title.

This season, UCLA defeated Pepperdine 3-2 on Jan. 25 and 3-1 on Feb. 9. UCLA leads the all-time series, 73-29.

Long Beach State will host the 2008 MPSF Championship on Apr. 24 & 26 at the Pyramid. The 49ers won the regular season title after beating Cal State Northridge 3-0 on Saturday.

Following are the parings for the upcoming tournament this week:
Apr. 16 (play-in match): USC at UC Irvine, 7 p.m.
Apr. 19 (quarterfinals): USC/UC Irvine winner at BYU, 7 p.m. (MDT); Pepperdine at UCLA, 7 p.m.; Stanford at CS Northridge, 7 p.m.
