The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team begins its 2012 schedule Sunday in the Arizona desert as the featured team in a 15-team field.
Pac-12 Conference opponents Arizona State (8th), Arizona (22nd), Colorado (23rd), Stanford (41st) and Washington State (89th) are the highest ranked league rivals and chief contenders for the annual title. Other ranked teams include San Diego State (34th), Denver (40th) and North Texas (56th).
The Bruins' entire roster will be competing with senior Brianna Do playing as an individual. The five-player lineup includes two juniors, a sophomore and a pair of freshmen. This group won two tournaments last quarter, including the Fall Preview in Tennessee.
Third-year junior Tiffany Lua, who was selected to the 2012 Curtis Cup Team for the second time in her career, and fourth-year junior Lee Lopez, a winner at the Rainbow Wahine event in November, are UCLA's top two players. Lopez leads the team with a 71.2 scoring average and is six-under par through 12 rounds; Lua ranks second at 71.6 and is one-under through a dozen rounds.
Sophomore Ani Gulugian has recorded three Top 20 results in four starts, highlighted by a 10th place finish at the Rainbow Wahine tournament.
Freshman Erynne Lee recorded a pair of Top 10 finishes in three events and was averaging 72.0 in nine rounds. The Bruins' other freshman, Kyle Roig, placed 11th in Hawai'i while averaging 73.6 in three starts.
Do, a qualifier for the 2012 Futures Tour, made two starts, averaged 72.0 and tied for eighth in Hawai'i. She is the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Champion.
