No. 3 Bruins Fall Upset at No. 8 Baylor, 4-3

Feb. 10, 2007

WACO, Texas - The third-ranked UCLA men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, dropping a close 4-3 decision to eighth-ranked Baylor at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The previously undefeated Bruins fall to 5-1 on the season, while the Bears improve to 5-1 overall.

Saturday's match was eventually decided at court No. 4, where Baylor senior Matija Zgaga outlasted Bruin junior Mathieu Dehaine, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4.

Baylor started strong by winning the doubles point, the first point scored against UCLA this season. Lars Poerschke and Zgaga claimed victory first for the Bears with an 8-4 win on court two over Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol. Michal Kokta and Dominik Mueller, after trailing 4-2, stormed back and sealed the doubles point for BU with an 8-6 upset at No. 3 doubles over 18th-ranked Dehaine and Jeremy Drean. In the final doubles match, Bruin seniors Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel defeated 44th-ranked David Galic and Matt Brown, 8-6 at court No. 1.

The Bears took an early 2-0 lead once singles play began when 66th-ranked Denes Lukacs quickly downed Drean on court six, 6-2, 6-2. However, UCLA would even the contest at 2-2 with wins by Kohlloeffel and Surapol at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. Baylor gained the advantage again, taking a 3-2 lead after a win by Mueller at court No. 5. The Bruins evened it once again when Abid downed Poerschke, 7-6(6), 6-4 at court No. 2.

At that point, Zgaga was down 4-2 in the third set to Dehaine. Zgaga went on to win four straight games to claim the win for the Bears.

UCLA was playing without Gruendler in singles play, as the senior was nursing an injury. He has been the Bruins' No. 4 player for the early part of the year.

UCLA looks to regroup next week, traveling to Chicago for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors. The Bruins are scheduled to meet Miami on Friday, Feb. 16.
