The UCLA swimming and diving team will kickoff the 2011-2012 season this Saturday when they travel up the 101 freeway to compete against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The meet will begin at noon on Saturday.
Oregon State will also be at the meet, but will not go head-to-head with the Bruins since UCLA will face the Beavers in January.
The Bruins have never lost to the Gauchos and hold a 27-0 win streak over the Big West team. This will be the first of many road competitions for the Bruins as they will not host a home meet until January, 2012.
Last season, the Bruins finished fourth at the conference meet and 20th at NCAAs. UCLA lost top athletes Lauren Hall, Brittany Beauchan, Sam Vanden Berge and Laura Winn to graduation, but have a very talented squad ready to compete this year led by All-Americans Bianca Casciari and Yasi Jahanshahi.
The team has also added several top freshmen including diver Emma Ivory-Ganja, who has qualified for the Olympic Trials on four disciplines (3M, 3M synchro, platform, platform synchro).
