LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's basketball program will embark on a seven-day goodwill tour in China from Aug. 22-29, playing three games against NCAA-level competition in Beijing and Shanghai on a trip sponsored by the Pac-12 Conference.
The Bruins' week-long tour through China is part of "China-USA University Sports Week." The Pac-12 Conference has worked with the Federation of University Sports of China to produce the trip.
UCLA's stay in Beijing and Shanghai comes just over three months before the Bruins will open newly-renovated Pauley Pavilion, the team's home arena for 46 seasons (opened Dec. 1965) before closing for full-scale renovations during the Bruins' 2011-12 campaign.
The Bruins return three starters from last season's team that finished 19-14 (11-7 Pac-12). Key returners include juniors David Wear, Travis Wear, Joshua Smith and Tyler Lamb. Additionally, UCLA welcomes the nation's top-ranked recruiting class.
Players and coaches will have the opportunity to visit numerous historic landmarks, including the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace.
Traveling via Air China, the basketball program will arrive in Beijing on Thursday, Aug. 23, before facing Tsinghua University on Saturday, Aug. 25. The Bruins will fly to Shanghai the following day and play against Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Monday, Aug. 27.
UCLA will take on the Shanghai Sharks, a professional Chinese team, the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Yuan Shen Sports Center, before flying back to Los Angeles on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
Fans will have the opportunity to attend two "meet and greet" events - one in Beijing and one in Shanghai - where they can interact with head coach Ben Howland and the team. UCLA's allotment of tickets to each of the three games has sold out.
The Bruins open their 2012-13 season in a renovated Pauley Pavilion against Indiana State on Friday, Nov. 9. Fans interested in purchasing season tickets for UCLA's upcoming 19-game home slate should call UCLA's Central Ticket Office at (310) 825-2946.
