Bruins Tie Waves, Down Rutgers
UCLA went 1-0-1 last week, tying Pepperdine, 1-1 on the road before downing Rutgers, 1-0 in its 2011 home opener at the North Athletic Field. The Bruins were in Malibu on Friday and looking to avenge last season's loss to the Waves, who snapped UCLA's 73-match home winning streak. Pepperdine, however, took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute and held that advantage until late in the second half. Luckily for the Bruins, freshman Ally Courtnall struck in the 88th minute to tie the match and eventually send it into overtime. Despite several quality chances late in regulation and in overtime, UCLA had to settle for a 1-1 draw. The Bruins out-shot the Waves, 20-4 on the day. UCLA then downed Rutgers, 1-0 on Sunday, as freshman Megan Oyster headed in a Charney Burk corner kick in the 33rd minute for the game's only goal.

Bruins Notch a Pair of Wins over SEC Opponents in Tennessee
UCLA turned in a pair of solid showings at the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic, Aug. 26- & 28 in Knoxville. The Bruins began the event with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over host Tennessee before 2,046 fans (the fifth largest crowd in Tennessee history). The Lady Vols got on the board in the 63rd minute and owned a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. The Bruins, however, scored in the 81st (Bywaters) and 85th (Leroux) minutes to pull out the victory. UCLA then rounded out play at the event on Sunday, posting a 2-0 upset over No. 8 Florida. Goals by Ally Courtnall (34:49) and Leroux (71:30) were the difference in that match. UCLA's Abby Dahlkemper, Samantha Mewis, Courtnall and Leroux (MVP) were named to the all-tournament team.

Leroux Named Pac-12 POW
Due to her outstanding play in Tennessee, UCLA forward Sydney Leroux was named Pac-12 Women's Player of the Week for Aug. 22-29. Against Tennessee, Leroux scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory. The Vancouver, B.C., native then contributed to UCLA's 2-0 upset over No. 8 Florida with an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. It marks Leroux's third Conference Player of the Week honor and the 28th all-time selection for UCLA. Leroux was also honored the same week by Soccer America, CollgeSoccer360.com and LA Soccer News.

Mewis, Stewart, Dahlkemper Thrown Into Action
A total of six players have started in each of the team's first five matches this season and three of them are newcomers, as Samantha Mewis, Chelsea Stewart and Abby Dahlkemper have all solidified their spots among UCLA's starting 11. Freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland has also been a mainstay in the lineup, as she has started the last four matches in goal. The other three players on the team to start every match are Sydney Leroux, Zakiya Bywaters and Lucretia Lee.

UCLA in the National Rankings
For the second week in a row, UCLA checks in at No. 4 in the Soccer America rankings and No. 6 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll. The Bruins are also ranked No. 5 by Soccer Times.

Leroux up for Prestigious Honor
Sydney Leroux has been named one of 30 candidates in the country who are in the running for the 2011 Lowe's Senior Class Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
