No. 3 UCLA Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 10 Long Beach State, 17-4

Los Angeles - Senior Michael March scored three first-quarter goals and classmate Logan Powell added four second-quarter goals to lead the third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team past 10th-ranked Long Beach State, 17-4, Friday afternoon at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

UCLA registered 17 goals from 12 Bruins, as only March and Powell finished the afternoon with multiple goals.

The Bruins (14-5, 5-2 MPSF) jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals from junior Marco Santos (6:39) and March (6:06) in the first quarter. Long Beach State (9-15, 1-6 MPSF) got on the board at 5:43 in the first quarter when freshman Jeff Greenwood put the ball past Bruin goalkeeper Chay Lapin. March collected two more goals in the first quarter to finish the day with a season-high three.

Leading 4-1 after the first quarter, the Bruins held the Beach scoreless in the second quarter, outscoring the vistors, 6-0. Powell recorded four goals on four attempts in the period and senior Grant Zider and junior Justin Johnson found the back of the cage to give UCLA a 10-1 hafltime lead.

Long Beach State cut the UCLA margin to 10-2 at 4:00 in the third quarter on Greenwood's second goal. The Bruins extended the lead to 12-2 on goals by junior Matthew Jacobs and sophomore Krsto Sbutega. The Bruins led 12-3 after three periods and outscored the Beach, 5-1, in the final quarter.

Freshman goalkeeper Chay Lapin earned the start for UCLA and totaled four saves in the first half. Senior Will Didinger made two stops in the third frame, and junior Matt Kellogg recorded six saves in the final quarter.

Long Beach State junior goalkeeper Steve MacKenzie made seven stops before senior Tyler Anderson manned the cage for the game's final three minutes.

Junior Brian Jacobs tallied his first goal of the season on a fastbreak with 2:04 remaining in the contest. Freshmen Tyler Jemmett and Jeffrey Smith scored their second goals of the season. Senior James Palmer's goal with 6:55 to play was his third of the year.

The third-ranked Bruins play their final regular-season game at home against UC Irvine on Sunday, Nov. 19. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Sunday's match will mark the final home contest for UCLA's seven seniors.
