Lumpkin Earns Postgrad Scholarship

Aug. 4, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- Elizabeth Lumpkin, former women's tennis player at UCLA and Craig Sheedy, former diver at ARIZONA, have been selected as winners of the 2008-09 Oroweat "Healthy Minds" Postgraduate Scholarship, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Chosen from a pool of Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship winners which included 19 male recipients and 20 female recipients, Lumpkin and Sheedy are recognized by the Pac-10 and its corporate partner Oroweat for their overall excellence in athletics, academics, service and commitment to graduate education. Each will receive a $10,000 scholarship for postgraduate study.

"Oroweat is proud to present the "Healthy Minds" scholarship program," said Dan Larson, Oroweat's Director of Marketing. "We congratulate and recognize the special achievements of Elizabeth and Criag, and extend the best to all the Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship recipients in their continuing education."

Lumpkin, a native of Naperville, Ill., was a singles and doubles player for the Bruins. Her semifinal singles-match victory at the 2008 NCAA Championships helped UCLA capture the national crown and wrapped up her collegiate career. That same year, she went 24-1 in singles, was undefeated at the No. 4 (4-0) and No. 5 (15-0) positions. She was a Pac-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 25, 2008, after defeating three ranked players from three teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation. A team captain as a senior, she ranked in the top 100 in the nation individually, and No. 55 in doubles, in her final season at UCLA.

Outside of sport, Lumpkin has complimented her studies in communications and political science with a variety of activities, including volunteering at the Mattel Children's hospital and with Habitat for Humanity. She has participated in events geared toward youth, including "I'm Going to College Event," "Women in Sports Day" and "Marathon for Kids Celebration." She served on the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for two years and on the Bruin Athletic Council for three years, earning leadership honors such as the Arthur Ashe Leadership Award for West Region and the Cissy Leary Sportsmanship Award for West Region.

Lumpkin was recently selected one of 30 UCLA students to participate in the Center for American Politics and Public Policy Program in Washington, D.C., where she interns at CBS News and conducts original research for the "Evening News" television magazine.
