WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior Benjamin Kohlloeffel has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Kohlloeffel ran his dual singles record to 9-0 with three big wins over the weekend for the Bruins at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Sixth-ranked UCLA defeated No. 26 Miami, 4-1, and No. 7 Illinois, 4-2, at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago before falling in the semifinals to No. 2 Ohio State, 4-2. Kohlloeffel was victorious in all three of his singles matches against some of the nation's top players, and won two doubles matches while the third was unfinished.
The 2006 NCAA Singles Champion, Kohlloeffel dropped only one set on the weekend, losing a second-set tiebreaker to Miami's Luis D'Agord but taking the match in three, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-3. Against Illinois, the fifth-ranked Kohlloeffel defeated home favorite Kevin Anderson, ranked 23rd, 7-6 (3), 6-1. He then had a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 62 Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State in Sunday's semifinal and was the only Bruin to score a point in singles.
Teaming with Philipp Gruendler at No. 1 doubles, Kohlloeffel picked up doubles wins against Ohio State and Miami, improving his doubles record to 15-0 overall this year.
This is Kohlloeffel's fourth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor as a singles player and second this season. He has also won once as a doubles team with Gruendler. It is the fifth weekly honor all-time for UCLA.
