LOS ANGELES -- The UCLA Bruins defeated the Westmont College Warriors, 73-43, in an exhibition game in the John Wooden Center. Tennessee transfer Alyssia Brewer led the Bruins wtih 17 points and 12 rebounds. The senior forward added two assists and two blocks in just 19 minutes of action.
The Bruins jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back, building a 36-23 at halftime.
UCLA shot 40.5 percent (15-for-37) from the field in the first half while holding Westmont to 30.8 percent (8-for-26). The Bruins also forced 12 Warrior miscues and outrebounded Westmont 27-16.
The Bruins were even better defensively in the second half, holding Westmont to 26.1 percent from the field, and 28.6 percent (14-for-49) from the field for the game. The Bruins ended up shooting 42.9 percent (30-for-70) from the field for the game. UCLA outrebounded Westmont 52 to 31 and forced 24 turnovers while recording 18 steals.
A total of five Bruins scored in double figures, in addition to Brewer. Senior Markel Walker turned in her patented all-around performance with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Junior Atonye Nyingifa also had a solid outing with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and two aasists.
Tugce Canitez was the only Warrior to reach double figures with a game-high 18 points. She also added eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
The Bruins open up the 2012-13 season in New Pauley Pavilion on Nov. 10 with a 7:05 p.m. clash with San Diego State. Both the Bruins and the Aztecs are receiving votes in both polls (AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll).
