Feb. 27, 2012
Redshirt junior Vanessa Zamarripa (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township HS) of the UCLA gymnastics team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 20-26.
Zamarripa led the Bruins to a national-high team score of 198.050 in a dual meet victory over Arizona State on Sunday. Zamarripa won the all-around with a team season-best 39.625 and tied for first on beam with a season-high 9.925. She also set a new season-high on floor exercise, scoring 9.925 to place third, and finished third on vault (9.9) and fourth on bars (9.875). Zamarripa has hit 65 consecutive routines in team competition and has scored 9.9 or better on vault in 16 consecutive meets. Thanks in part to Zamarripa's scores, UCLA recorded season-highs on bars (49.475) and floor (49.6, eighth-highest team score in school history). The Bruins' team total of 198.050 was the 10th-highest in school history and highest by a UCLA team since the 2004 NCAA Championships.
This is Zamarripa's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and fifth of her career.
