SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 11-4, Saturday afternoon in an MPSF contest at Campus Pool. Sophomore Ben Hohl led the Bruins with four goals, and junior Scott Davidson added three to help UCLA overcome an early 2-0 deficit.
UCLA (15-5, 5-2 MPSF) took advantage of the contest with an 11-0 scoring run, extending from the first quarter through the fourth quarter. The Bruins held UC Santa Barbara (15-9, 4-3 MPSF) scoreless for a 21-minute, 14-second span.
After trailing 2-0, senior Chris Allen cut UC Santa Barbara's lead in half with 3:09 to play in the opening quarter. Sophomore Jacob Murphy tied the contest, 2-2, early in the second quarter. UCLA extended its advantage to 4-2 by halftime with goals from Hohl and senior Krsto Sbutega.
The Bruins outscored UC Santa Barbara by a 4-0 margin in the third quarter to lead 8-2. Hohl added the final three of his four goals in the third period.
UCLA stretched its margin to 10-2 early in the final quarter, as Davidson scored back-to-back goals - including a five-meter penalty shot. Junior Clay Jorth registered a goal with 4:13 to play to cap UCLA's 11-0 run.
UC Santa Barbara received goals from Dane Lindstrom, Marko Pance, Miles Price, Stefan Partelow.
UCLA junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin netted six saves. UC Santa Barbara's Fraser Bunn made nine stops.
The Bruins return to action at No. 5 Pepperdine in an MPSF match on Saturday, Nov. 22. Game time at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool is slated for 12 p.m.
