WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The UCLA softball team was selected first in the Preseason Pac-10 Coaches Poll, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. The Bruins received 43 points and three first-place votes.
Arizona State earned two first-place votes and 41 points to finish second, while Washington also received two first-place nods and 36 points to place third. Arizona was ranked fourth with 34 points and Stanford, which earned the other first-place vote, was ranked fifth with 31 points. Rounding out the poll were California (6th, 19 pts.) and Oregon and Oregon State, which were tied for seventh with 10 points.
Seven points were awarded for a first-place vote, six points for a second-place vote and so on. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
The Bruins, who are ranked fourth in both the NFCA and USA Softball preseason rankings, open up the 2009 season on Friday, Feb. 6 against Pacific at 4:30 p.m. at Easton Stadium.
