FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Bruins opened the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday with a record-setting swim, breaking four school records, including the team mark in the 800 Freestyle Relay, which qualified them for the NCAA Championships. UCLA finished sixth overall in both relays on Wednesday, the 200 Medley and the 800 Freestyle.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the quartet of freshman Katie Kinnear, sophomores Jessica Khojasteh and Noelle Tarazona and junior Kathryn Murphy posted a season-best mark of 1:39.44, more than a second off UCLA's top previous time set two weeks ago at USC. To lead off the relay, Kinnear had the fastest 50 Backstroke time (24.88) since Katie Arnold in the middle of the last decade, while Tarazona's 23.59 split time in the 50 Butterfly tied the fastest split since Yasi Jahanshahi from a few years ago.

The Bruins' B team, senior Andrea Reigel, junior Emily Weir, senior Stephanie Christofferson and sophomore Kate Bassett had the 12th-best time of 1:41.04.

In the second and final race on Wednesday, juniors Ting Quah and Anna Senko, Tarazona and sophomore Monica Dornick broke the school mark in the 800 Free Relay in a time of 7:07.61, qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The previous record was set at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships by Lauren Hall, Alex Sullivan, Quah and Laurence Delisle (7:08.09). Quah's 200 leadoff split was a school best (1:44.98), besting Sullivan's mark (1:45.55) in '11.

The Bruin B squad of freshman Megan Rankin, senior Rachel Godfred, sophomore Kacey Milligan and junior Lauren Baker had the 11th-best mark on the evening at 7:20.11.

Through two events, the Bruins are in sixth place with 96 points, but just 22 back of first-place Stanford.

Day two of the Pac-12 Championships commences at 11 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 500 Freestyle, the 200 Individual Medley, the 50 Free and the One-Meter Diving. The event finals for those four events, as well as the 200 Free Relay, begins at 6 p.m.
