No. 17 UCLA Baseball Sweeps Sacramento State With 11-2 Win

LOS ANGELES - Jeff Gelalich went 3-for-3 with three run-scoring doubles to lead the No. 17 UCLA baseball team past Sacramento State, 11-2, and sweep the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Zack Weiss (1-1) earned the victory in UCLA's sixth consecutive win, limiting Sacramento State (4-7) to two runs and four hits through seven innings. The sophomore right-hander struck out four batters and walked three.

Tyler Heineman extended his hitting streak to 11 games, going 2-for-4 with one double, two RBI and one run. Kevin Williams went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run for UCLA (8-3).

Gelalich finished with three RBI, two runs and one walk in Sunday's series finale. In three games against Sacramento State, he went 5-for-8 (.625) with four doubles, five RBI and three walks.

"Our batting lineup has been very strong, one through nine" Gelalich said. "We feel as if we don't have a weak spot in the lineup. Everyone who comes up is capable of getting a hit when we need it. We're feeling good at the plate right now."

The Bruins scored one run in the second inning and two in the third to claim a 3-0 cushion. After Sacramento State scored two runs in the top of the fourth, UCLA answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to lead, 6-2. The Bruins extended their advantage with one run in the fifth inning and four in the sixth.

Zach Morgan (0-2) absorbed the loss for the visiting Hornets, allowing one run and two hits in the first two innings.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Kevin Williams drilled a double to the wall in right-center field, allowing Pat Valaika to score. Williams was thrown out at third base trying to stretch his double into a triple.

In the third inning, Gelalich's double to the right-center field gap scored Cody Keefer, before Brown's single to center field sent home Gelalich.

Sacramento State cut the Bruins' margin to 3-2 in the fourth. With runners at second and third base, Trevor Paine's groundout scored Rhys Hoskins. A hard one-hop single to third base hit by David Del Grande sent home Will Soto.

UCLA claimed a 7-2 lead with three runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth. Heineman had a two-run single in the fourth inning before Gelalich lined his second run-scoring double of the game to the right-center field gap. In the fifth inning, Williams sent home Valaika with a two-out single to left field.

UCLA's four-run seventh inning featured Gelalich's third RBI-double in as many plate appearances.

The Bruins return to action against UC Riverside at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday, March 6. Game time is 6 p.m. Tickets to Tuesday's game cost $7 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 16 and under).

Game Notes: Pat Valaika went 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs, extending his hitting streak to a career-long nine games ... Eric Jaffe made his second appearance of the season and recorded all three outs in the ninth inning ... Gelalich notched his team-leading seventh multiple-hit game and third multiple-RBI effort of the season ... in three games against Sacramento State, UCLA hit .319 (30-for-94) with seven doubles and 22 runs ... the Bruins' pitching staff logged a 1.33 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 27.0 innings against Sacramento State.
