The Series Against Stanford
UCLA and Stanford have split their two meetings this season, both in non-conference action. Stanford earned a 9-5 victory in the championship match of the Stanford Invitational on Feb. 5. UCLA edged the Cardinal, 5-4, in the title game at the UCI Invitational three weeks later (Feb. 26). KK Clark leads UCLA with five total goals in the team's two games against Stanford.
Bruins Take Two on the Road
The Bruins have won 12 of their last 13 matches, having earned a pair of victories in non-conference action on the road last weekend. KK Clark scored a team-leading five goals on Saturday in a 10-6 win at No. 6 UC Irvine. Sarah Orozco slammed home a penalty shot in overtime on Sunday, lifting the Bruins past Loyola Marymount, 7-6.
Leading the Way on Defense
Backed by goalkeeper Caitlin Dement, UCLA has recorded a 5.20 goals against average through 20 matches, the second-lowest mark in the MPSF. Dement's 5.11 goals against average also ranks second in the conference. The senior from Chino, Calif., has tallied a season-high 14 saves in three matches this season.
Honoring Our Seniors
Prior to Saturday's game against Stanford, UCLA will honor its five seniors in a special "Senior Night" ceremony. Nicole Barker, KK Clark, Caitlin Dement, Sarah Orozco and Hannah Sebenaler will be playing in their final regular-season home game that night. This year's senior class was a part of the Bruins' historic 2009 NCAA Championship team as freshmen.
KK Among MPSF's Top Scorers
With the MPSF Tournament approaching, senior KK Clark ranks second among MPSF players with 2.30 goals per game. She leads UCLA with 46 goals in 20 matches. Clark has scored in all but one match for the Bruins, having netted a season-high five goals in UCLA's 10-6 win at UC Irvine last Saturday. The resident of Atherton, Calif., enters this weekend's game against Stanford having scored 157 career goals.
Player of the Week Selections
KK Clark has twice captured MPSF Player of the Week acclaim, while Caitlin Dement secured the weekly honor on March 5. Clark was named MPSF Player of the Week after UCLA went 3-0 at the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 21-22) and after leading UCLA to the UCI Invitational title on Feb. 26. Dement recorded 11 saves in UCLA's 6-5 win at USC on March 3 to earn the weekly award.
Key Performers for UCLA
Seven Bruins have registered at least 10 goals this season, while five players have each dished 12 or more assists. Becca Dorst ranks second on the team with 22 goals, having totaled 12 assists and 21 steals. Emily Greenwood has scored 19 goals and leads UCLA with 54 earned exclusions (including 10 last weekend).
Looking at the Conference
The winner of Saturday's match between UCLA and Stanford will earn the No. 1 seed in the MPSF Tournament. The remaining six seeds have been determined and are, in order, (3) USC, (4) Arizona State, (5) California, (6) San Jose State, (7) San Diego State and (8) Hawaii. UCLA will open the MPSF Tournament on Friday, April 27, against either Hawaii or San Diego State.
