STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 6-5 decision at No. 2 Stanford in the first-place match of the NorCal Tournament on Sunday evening at Avery Aquatic Center. Senior Scott Davidson led UCLA (8-1) with two goals, and senior Chay Lapin registered nine saves.
Playing in the NorCal Tournament title match for the second consecutive season, the Bruins fell short in the second half after having tied the contest, 3-3, by halftime. Stanford (8-0) outscored UCLA by a 2-0 margin in the third quarter to secure a 5-3 advantage and held off the Bruins in the final quarter.
Stanford was guided by Drac Wigo's four-goal effort and Janson Wigo's two-goal game. The Cardinal received 12 saves in the cage from goalkeeper Jimmie Sandman to help secure the tournament title.
The Bruins, who were denied their first NorCal Tournament title since 2004, return home this week to open their new aquatic facility, the Spieker Aquatics Center. UCLA hosts UC Irvine in a non-conference match on Saturday, Sept. 26. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
