Bruins Drop Two at Kajikawa Classic

Feb. 10, 2007

Final Stats: Texas A&M 5, UCLA 4
Final Stats: New Mexico 14, UCLA 1 (5 innings)

TEMPE, Ariz. - UCLA struggled through the day at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday, falling 5-4 to No. 13 Texas A&M before dropping a 13-1 five-inning loss to New Mexico in the second game of the day. The Bruins complete their weekend schedule with a 1 pm game against Nevada on Sunday.

Game 1: Texas A&M 5, UCLA 4
Errors plagued the Bruins in the first game of the day, starting in the top of the first inning when an outfield error turned into a three-run play for the Aggies to take a 3-0 lead early in the game.

After a Jodie Legaspi home run put the Bruins on the board in the bottom of the second inning, A&M scored their fourth run of the day in the top half of the third when Megan Gibson drew a two-out walk and came around to score on a throwing error to make the score 4-1.

UCLA scrapped back again in the bottom half of the frame. Tara Henry opened the rally with one out in the inning, reaching on a bad throw to first on a slap bunt to the left side of the Aggies infield. After Henry stole second base and Krista Colburn drew a walk, Henry scored and Colburn took third base on a single to shallow right field by Kaila Shull. A ground-out by Langenfeld scored Colburn and advanced Shull to scoring position at second base. Shull crossed the plate on a single up the middle by Legaspi, tying the score at 4-4.

Texas A&M's Joy Davis was hit by a pitch to start an Aggie rally in the top of the fourth, as she proceeded to steal second base, go to third on a ground out by Sharonda McDonald and score on a single by Jami Lobpries to give A&M the 5-4 lead.

That was all the offense Amanda Scarborough would need as she allowed just two more Bruin base runners to seal the victory.

Anjelica Selden took the loss for UCLA, allowing eight hits and five runs, although only one run was earned. She struck out six in the game.

Game 2: New Mexico 14, UCLA 1 (5 innings)
UCLA had six fielding errors and gave up 14 runs on 12 hits in the second game of the day, a loss to New Mexico. Megan Langenfeld took the loss, pitching two-plus innings on the day.

After the Lobos put up two runs in the top of the second inning, UCLA cut the lead in half by manufacturing a run in the bottom half of the frame. Legaspi drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by Lisa Dodd and scored on a single by Whitney Holum to make the score 2-1.

From that point, the Bruins pitching and defense struggled mightily, allowing an additional 11 runs to come across the plate in the game.

The Bruins complete their opening weekend schedule on Sunday with a 1 pm game against Nevada.
