Box Score

The third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team shut out Oregon on Friday evening to post a 1-0 victory at Pape' Field in Eugene, Ore. The win extends the Bruins unbeaten streak to 20 games, dating back to last season.

UCLA freshman Taylor Smith scored the game's lone goal in the 21st minute, marking her fifth of the season. Sophomore Samantha Mewis set up the game-winning goal by Smith for her third assist of the year.

The Bruins got off to a fast start in the first half as senior Zakiya Bywaters, who was coming off earning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors, created three dangerous chances in the first 16 minutes, including forcing one save.

However, Smith would be the one to break through just four minutes later. Mewis played a dangerous pass in behind for a sprinting Smith. Fighting off two defenders, Smith dribbled into the box and fired a low shot inside the far post, beating Oregon goalkeeper Abby Steele for the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, UCLA continued to press Oregon looking for a second goal but it was not to be on the night despite taking eleven shots.

Overall, the Bruins' defense was solid, allowing just five shots in the contest, including only one in the second half. The Bruins were more effective with their shot total, totaling 17 shots, four of which were on goal. In addition, goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland earned her sixth shutout of the season, making two saves.

UCLA improves its record to 10-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the Pac-12. Oregon drops to 5-6-2, 0-3-1 in the Pac-12. The Bruins continue their road trip on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Oregon State in a game televised live on Pac-12 Networks at 12pm PT.
