Winds increased and so did scores in the second round. Kono carded a cool 71 (-1) and was at six-under par 138. She trailed leader Christine Song by two shots. Uribe climbed into a tie for sixth place -- an improvement of seven spots -- with an even par 72 and was at one-under par 143. Both competitors played the Legends Course at LPGA International.
"The wind picked up on the back nine, where it was definitely a two-club wind at times," said Kono, a Honolulu native. "This is not an easy course and with the wind, it's a beast. Even par is a really good score here.
"Bogeys are going to happen here, and if you're not paying attention, it can get away from you fast," she added.
Kono had three bogeys and four birdies on her card. At the 18th with a 20-mph wind in her face, she stiffed a 5-wood 175 yards to one foot and finished with a birdie.
Former Bruin Hannah Jun had a tougher time on the Legends course, signing for an 80 (+8) and dropping into a tie for 97th at 153 (+9). Senior Brianna Do carded a 77 (+5) on Thursday and was tied for 118th at 155 (+11).
After 72 holes, the 139-player field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties for the final 18 holes. Players making the cut will compete in the final round on the LPGA Champions Course. The top 40 players and ties following Sunday's round will receive 2012 LPGA membership.
